It started with a Purple Envelope
Back in 2006 cloud Accounting software didn’t exist. In fact, the internet was barely more than an online brochure for most Accounting firms. Small businesses, micro businesses and sole traders had a difficult relationship with Accountants, typically seeing them once a year and dreading the tax bill (and the Accountants bill)!.
Lucy Cohen, at just 23 years old had spotted this pattern in her family. Mazuma was created drawing on Lucy’s childhood experiences of seeing the stress and anxiety that tax can cause for people. Growing up in a family of self-employed creatives she noticed that they were fantastic at what they did, but not so great with the tax and accounts side of their businesses. Spotting a gap in the market for low cost, subscription-based accountancy services, Mazuma was born.
But how would she get people to get their information to her every month when she didn’t have an office? Simple. With a purple envelope.
Best Friends In Business
After attending Howell’s School Llandaff together, Lucy Cohen and Sophie Hughes lost touch when Lucy went to a different 6th Form College. But they reignited their friendship when they both found themselves completing their Accountancy qualifications in the same college, at the same time.
Lucy told Sophie about her idea with the purple envelopes and Sophie immediately offered her help.
That was in 2006 and the pair have never looked back.
The first in the UK to launch a subscription model for Accountancy services, they have created a formidable business partnership based on decades of friendship and trust. The pair have taken the Accounting world by storm and been the catalysts for many of the changes we see in the industry today.
From little acorns grow mighty oaks
Fast forward to today and Mazuma has grown from two ambitious young women working from a spare bedroom, into the UK’s leading provider of subscription-based Accounting services.
It’s no longer just the purple envelopes either. Now Mazuma has it’s own app, online platform and proprietary technology that is specially designed for Mazuma’s market.
By 2023 they are forecast to have over 10,000 subscribers as well as an extensive reach across the industry.
With their disruptive business model, incredible customer service and highly efficient and accurate product, it’s no wonder Mazuma is one of the most decorated Accountancy firms in existence.
